Yunus appointed 4 advisors, who are they and what will be their stance regarding India

Yunus government expanded, four new advisors appointed: The interim government led by Chief Advisor Professor Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh was expanded. Four more advisors joined his team on Friday. The new advisors include economist Wahiduddin Mahmud, former Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumdar, former Power Secretary Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan and Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. With these four, the number of members in the advisory council of the interim government increased to 21. Nobel laureate Yunus and 13 other advisers were sworn in on August 8, four days after the Sheikh Hasina-led government collapsed last week amid a revolt over government job quota reforms. Wahiduddin Mahmud is a former professor of the prestigious Dhaka University and was also an advisor in the 1996 caretaker government. Ali Imam Majumdar was appointed as the special assistant to the chief adviser of this interim government on August 12. While Jahangir Alam Chowdhury is the former director general of Border Guard, Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina resigned and secretly left for India on August 5 following a massive revolt triggered by a student agitation over the quota system for government jobs. Yunus, 84, known globally as the ‘father of microfinance’, was declared the head of the interim government by President Mohammad Shahabuddin after he dissolved parliament.

Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmood
Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge and was a professor at the University of Dhaka. He was a former member of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh and was in charge of the Ministry of Finance and Planning. He is currently a member of the United Nations Committee on Development Policy (UN-CDP), President of the South Asian Network of Economic Research Institutes (SANEI) and Senior Advisor to the Research Program of the International Growth Center in Bangladesh. He had worked as a senior advisor at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Dr. Mahmud has played an important role in national policy making.

Along with Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, he founded the Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and was its chairman from 2003 to 2013. It is an apex institution for funding microfinance programmes of MFIs/NGOs in Bangladesh. He is also the founder-chairman of the Institute of Microfinance (INM), a sister institution of PKSF. He has worked and written extensively on economic development and economic policy. Wahiduddin Mahmud has been given charge of the Ministry of Planning and the Ministry of Education.

Ali Imam Mazumdar
Former Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumdar has been appointed as special assistant to Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus. Born in 1950, Majumdar joined the Bangladesh Civil Service on February 11, 1977 as an administrative officer. Majumdar served as the District Commissioner of Sylhet District and Cox’s Bazar District in 1997. In 2004, Majumdar became the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment. On 31 October 2006, Majumdar was appointed Principal Secretary to the Chief Advisor of the Caretaker Government. On 6 December 2006, he became the Cabinet Secretary of Bangladesh. In May 2007, he approved the proposal to raise the ranks of the chiefs of the three armed forces of Bangladesh. On 19 November 2007, the term was extended by one year. He informed his government that the document declaring Bangladesh’s independence had disappeared. He was also the chairman of Sonali Bank. Majumdar retired from the civil service on 28 November 2008.

Jahangir Alam Chowdhury
Lieutenant General (Retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has replaced Brigadier General (Retired) Sakhawat Hussain, Home Advisor of the Interim Government. Because the interim government has made some changes in its advisory council. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury is the former Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Jahangir Alam will also have charge of the Ministry of Agriculture besides the Home Ministry.

Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan
Another new advisor Muhammad Fazul Kabir Khan has been given charge of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. Fazul Kabir Khan also has the responsibility of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and the Ministry of Railways. He has been the former power secretary of the country. Kabir Khan did BA in Economics Honors from Dhaka University and in 1989 got a PhD degree in Economics from Boston University, America. He was an instructor in two universities of America. Later he was a senior lecturer at Singapore University. After that he worked for the World Bank. From 1998 to 2007 he was the CEO of a World Bank company in Bangladesh. From 2007 to 2009 he was the power secretary.

Yunus said, I wish for better relations with India
In an interview given to Times Now, an Indian news channel, Mohammad Yunus said, “India has to work with the leader elected by the people of Bangladesh. The relationship between us and India should be excellent and not one in which both of us look at each other with suspicion.” According to a report by BBC Hindi, former High Commissioner to Bangladesh Veena Sikri said, “Professor Yunus is known abroad for his work. We have to see what the coming times will be like for India and Bangladesh. As soon as Professor Yunus took the oath, PM Narendra Modi immediately congratulated him, this shows that India wants to work with whoever is in power in Bangladesh.”
