Don’t be inspired by Daisuke Hori, a 40-year-old from Japan who claims to have slept just 30 minutes a day for the past 12 years to extend his lifespan. “He began cutting back on his sleep 12 years ago in order to gain more active hours each day and has managed to limit his sleep to just 30 to 45 minutes a day,” reports the South China Morning Post.

Dr Sneha Sharma, Psychiatrist at Anvaya Healthcare says, “While many people are attracted to the idea of ​​reducing their sleep requirements to get more productive hours or achieve longevity, it is important to understand that most humans require 8-9 hours of sleep which can vary based on age, level of physical activity and sleep deprivation.”

Adequate sleep is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle because during sleep our body is not only resting but our brain is also active and diligently engaged in repair and recovery work. Sharma says, “Sleep is also a time when memory and learning consolidation takes place. While the body can handle acute sleep deprivation, persistent sleep deprivation can lead to long-lasting changes in our physical and psychological health. These changes range from effects on mood, increased anxiety and impulsivity, and cognitive decline. They can affect the executive functioning of the brain and also impact memory. Physical illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases can also be a result of poor sleep.”

Sleeping just 30 minutes a day is far less than most people need for optimal health. Here are some of the serious consequences that can occur:

cognitive impairment: Excessive sleep deprivation can seriously impact your cognitive functions, including memory, attention, and decision-making abilities. You may experience difficulty concentrating, slower reaction times, and impaired decision-making.

Mood disturbances: Lack of sleep can lead to mood swings, irritability, and increased stress. Persistent sleep deprivation can also lead to depression and anxiety disorders.
