Curd, also known as curd in India, is a staple of the country’s diet. It is an important part of the cuisine of different regions and is used in a variety of ways. However, many people may be confused about the benefits of yogurt compared to Greek yogurt.
Now available across India, Greek yogurt is seen as a healthy alternative to the yogurt Indians eat every day. However, is this really so? Here’s what you need to know about which food is better for you.
Benefits of Greek Yogurt
According to Health Shots, Greek yogurt is superior to regular Indian yogurt in one important aspect – protein. Greek yogurt is made by repeatedly straining yogurt through a strainer to remove excess whey. The resulting product is thick, dense and rich in protein.
The presence of protein makes this type of fermented milk more filling and beneficial for muscle repair and growth. But this is not its only benefit.
Greek yogurt also contains calcium, vitamin B12 and potassium. Calcium helps with bone health, while vitamin B12 is good for nerve function. Potassium is another useful nutrient present in this food.
“When it comes to protein, Greek yogurt reigns supreme,” Health Shots quoted clinical nutritionist Lovneet Batra as saying.
Not only this, Greek yogurt is rich in probiotics and gut-friendly bacteria, which aid digestion and help the immune system. This form of yogurt also has less lactose, making it more friendly to people with lactose intolerance.

Yogurt may not have the same protein density as Greek yogurt, but it makes up for it by being one of the best sources of probiotics. It greatly aids digestion and also boosts the immune system. According to Netmeds, compared to Greek yogurt, yogurt has more natural fat, making it creamier and tastier.

Greek Yogurt vs Yogurt: Which is Better?
Although both these food items are very good for health, their choice entirely depends on the requirements of the individual concerned. Those seeking an extra dose of protein should opt for Greek yogurt, while those focusing on their digestive system should prefer yogurt.
According to Health Shots, Batra said, “The biggest misconception people have is that Greek yogurt is healthy. In fact, a bowl full of yogurt in the afternoon is as good as your fancy yogurt. Even if you want to eat Greek yogurt, make sure you are eating plain yogurt. If you are trying to lose weight, you can eat homemade yogurt.”
