Yoga offers numerous health benefits. From strengthening muscles to reducing symptoms of several chronic diseases, yoga is a holistic way to heal the body and mind. Every year, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 to re-establish the importance of yoga routines in our daily lives and highlight how yoga can help us heal. Women go through several stages in their lives, from reproduction to menstruation and menopause – all these stages are driven by hormonal changes. Some of the issues faced by women are disruption in menstrual cycles, early onset of menstruation and prolonged menopausal transition, which can lead to conditions like fibroids, adenomyosis and several other reproductive diseases.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddha Akshar, author and columnist, founder of Akshar Yoga Centre, said, “Yoga is a powerful tool that can help women deal with the complexities of hormonal changes throughout their lives. When practised from a young age, yoga can prevent many health problems, and continued practice in the menopausal years can help prevent osteoporosis and promote heart health. Yoga creates a harmonious relationship between the body, mind and spirit, leading to physical and emotional stability.”

The theme of this year’s International Yoga Day is – Yoga for Women Empowerment. Himalayan Siddha Akshar has suggested five yoga asanas that can help women lead a healthy life:
Baddha Konasana (butterfly pose):
Also known as the butterfly pose, this seated pose opens the hips and stimulates the pelvic region, thereby reducing menstrual discomfort and increasing blood circulation to the reproductive organs.
Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) and Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations):
Surya Namaskar awakens vitality and strength, while Chandra Namaskar helps promote introspection and emotional balance, as well as nourishes hormonal balance.
Healing Walk:
The healing walk involves walking with the arms raised above the head and the palms facing outward. This gentle exercise helps to increase internal circulation within the body, reduce muscle tension and promote overall health.
Hanumanasana:
This split pose involves stretching the hamstrings, groin, and hips, thereby increasing flexibility and blood circulation in the lower body. It also helps stimulate the reproductive organs, thereby promoting overall pelvic health.
Vajrasana with Vajra Mudra:
Sitting in Vajrasana and holding the thunderbolt pose helps balance circulation, stimulate blood supply, and channel energy through the vajra nadi, thereby promoting overall health.
