On humanizing Purva in season 2
Tahir Raj Bhasin plays the role of Vikrant in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen. In season one, Vikrant is forced to marry Purva (Anchal Ji Singh), even though he is in love with Shikha (Shweta Tripathi). The second season follows Purva as she is kidnapped by Vikrant, a hitman assigned to kill her. Sengupta says that the second season was to make Purva more human. “In season one, we saw every character through Vikrant’s eyes. So, Purva looked like she was. But what if she wasn’t like that? Ultimately, it’s not a question of who is morally right or wrong But the end of the story is when you touch the finish line, not in the middle. So, that’s the whole idea, but I needed to show that there was a human side to it,” he explains.
However, the director agrees that Vikrant’s feeling of being trapped is genuine. He says, “When any emotion is pure and honest, it becomes more dangerous. Purva is a more pure person. So, this thing makes it more dangerous for her (Vikrant).”
Humanizing a character who has been constructed as an antagonist has its share of challenges. But in this story they are heightened because the character is an obsessive lover, and humanizing them runs the risk of glorifying that passion in a country that is infamous for it. Sengupta argues, “So far, we have seen Purva through Vikrant’s eyes. But is there more to it? Could she be someone else? He immediately asked her if there was someone else, and she said no. But she persisted, which made Vikrant’s eyes look passionate, but she gave him opportunities. So for me, that’s a great feeling to explore.”
the real villain of the show
The filmmaker argues that Vikrant feels trapped because of the intensity of Purva’s love, who is the real villain. “In my opinion, the more one character wants another character, the harder it becomes for another person. As long as Tom is obsessed with chasing Jerry, that mouse is willing to risk his life. It’s like that here,” he says, signing off.
Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen also stars Gurumeet Choudhary and Saurabh Shukla. All episodes of Season 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.
