Yamaha has filed a trademark application for the YZF-R2 name in India, indicating that the company is preparing to introduce a new supersport motorcycle for the local market. If launched, the R2 will sit between the existing YZF-R15 and YZF-R3, effectively marking a new step up in Yamaha’s entirely fairing lineup.
Will Yamaha R2 replace R15?
Currently, there is a clear gap in Yamaha’s Indian supersport range. The R15 is a 155cc motorcycle that is positioned as an entry-level performance bike, while the R3 is based directly on the 321cc twin-cylinder setup. The 200cc-plus R2 will bridge this niche neatly, and offer an upgrade path without a significant jump in price and performance over the R3.

Details about the R2 are limited. No test mule has been seen or officially confirmed regarding its engine configuration, hardware or launch timeline. For now, the trademark filing is the only concrete indicator of Yamaha’s intentions.
The Yamaha R15 is a cult classic
The Yamaha R15 continues to be a strong performer for the brand in India. at cost Priced at Rs 1.74 lakh (ex-showroom), it is powered by a 155cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 18.4 PS and 14.2 Nm, mated to a six-speed gearbox. Over the years, the R15 has built a loyal following and is often viewed as the first serious sportbike for many riders. Currently Yamaha’s average monthly sales with the R15 are around 8,000 to 10,000 units, making it one of the company’s best-selling models.
Above that is the Yamaha R3, which is priced at Rs 3.39 lakh (ex-showroom). The R3 uses a 321cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine that produces 42 PS and 29.5 Nm, also mated to a six-speed transmission. While more powerful and sophisticated, its price puts it in a different class altogether.

Yamaha R2 will compete with KTM RC200
When introduced, the YZF-R2 is expected to compete directly with motorcycles like the KTM RC 200, which currently retails. 2.14 lakh (ex-showroom). From a portfolio perspective, the R2 may initially co-exist with the R15, giving buyers more options. In the long term, depending on the market response, Yamaha may also evaluate it as a potential successor.
For now, Yamaha has not made any official announcement beyond the trademark filing, and more clarity is expected only after testing or product disclosure begins.
