World Parkinson’s Day 2024: Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily targets the nervous system and affects parts of the body controlled by nerves. Nerve cell damage in the brain reduces dopamine levels – causing Parkinson’s disease. Some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are tremors, slow movements, stiffness and loss of balance. Parkinson’s disease usually has a slow onset, with tremors barely noticeable. Forgetfulness, dementia, difficulty understanding and thinking are some of the cognitive effects of Parkinson’s disease. World Parkinson’s Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about this disorder. As we prepare to celebrate this day this year, here are some things to keep in mind.
Every year, World Parkinson’s Day is observed on 11 April. This year, the special day falls on Thursday.
In 1817, Dr. James Parkinson was the first person to discover the first case of Parkinson’s disease. In 1997, the European Association for Parkinson’s Disease announced that 11 April every year would be celebrated as World Parkinson’s Day. The World Health Organization also co-sponsored the event.
On this day, people gather to explore new research methods by which we can restrict or slow down the progression of this disease. It also creates an opportunity to celebrate the progress made in the field in understanding this disease and its symptoms. There have been significant improvements in understanding and treatment of this disease over the past few decades. The purpose of this day is to acknowledge the efforts of health practitioners who work to improve the quality of life of people suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
