History of World Oral Health Day
World Oral Health Day was first observed on 12 September 2007, the birthday of FDI founder Dr. Charles Godden. It was organized by the FDI World Dental Federation to raise global awareness about the importance of oral health and hygiene. However, in 2013, the FDI decided to move the date to 20 March to avoid conflict with other events and align with the international calendar. For the past decade, the day has been celebrated on 20 March to promote oral health education, prevention and advocacy across the world.
Theme of World Oral Health Day
The theme of the 2024 campaign is – A Happy Mouth… A Happy Body. Highlighting the complex relationship between oral health and overall well-being, the campaign is all about following dental hygiene rules to avoid dangerous diseases.
Importance of World Oral Health Day
Oral diseases can be easily prevented, yet due to lack of awareness people can suffer from a variety of dental problems, such as dental caries, periodontal (gum) disease, edentulism (complete loss of teeth), oral cancer, Oro-dental trauma, noma etc. Oral diseases can be reduced by paying attention to common risk factors and spreading awareness. Many of these problems can be prevented by quitting tobacco use, reducing alcohol, sugar intake and eating a balanced diet. Brushing your teeth twice daily may also help. Treating these problems in the early stages can help individuals live better lives.
