According to Dr. Tripathi, “It is especially helpful for winter-stressed skin that looks tired or uneven.

Best for: Dr. Tripathi suggests that rose oil is perfect for dry, sensitive or uneven skin tone.

Sweet Almond Oil: Classic Winter Comfort

Sweet almond oil has long been a winter favorite, soothing and emollient. It soothes irritation, strengthens the skin layer and brings a natural glow. “Almond oil is rich in fatty acids. It is thick, provides excellent moisture, adds shine, and also provides antioxidant benefits,” says Dr. Shukla. She further explains that almond oil is gentle even for sensitive skin.

Where to use: According to Dr. Tripathi, almond oil is perfect to use on the face and body, especially the elbows, knees and hands.

Jojoba oil: balancing act for all skin types

Technically a wax ester, jojoba oil closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum. Dr. Tripathi explains that this unique property of jojoba oil helps in maintaining moisture without leaving greasiness.

Why it works in winter: According to Dr. Tripathi, jojoba oil balances oil production while preventing dehydration, making it suitable for combination or acne-prone skin as well.

Squalene: Modern Moisture Shield

Derived from olives or sugarcane, squalene is a non-comedogenic, fast-absorbing oil that prevents transepidermal water loss, one of the biggest skin concerns of winter. “Its lightweight nature makes it suitable for layering under night creams,” says Dr Tripathi.

Ideal for: Dr. Tripathi explains that the beauty of squalene is that it is perfect for all skin types, including oily and sensitive skin.

When it comes to hair, dryness in winter can lead to breakage, fall and scalp problems. Dr. Shukla emphasizes the importance of choosing oils with the right molecular weight. Here are 5 winter oils she uses.

Coconut Oil: Timeless

“Coconut oil has been used for centuries,” says Dr. Shukla.Its triglyceride structure and fatty acids such as lauric acid give it a low molecular weight, allowing it to penetrate the hair shaft and attach to keratin.,

Plus, it forms a protective barrier, deeply hydrates, and can be gently washed off in under an hour.

Argan Oil (again!): Glow and Hydration

For hair, argan oil adds softness, reduces hair fall, and improves manageability, which is especially beneficial in the dry winter months. Dr. Shukla also highlights its versatility, saying, “Argan oil contains oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, vitamin E, sterols, and polyphenols. These components give it anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it excellent for hydration and repair.”

Olive Oil: Deep Conditioning Hero

“Olive oil provides excellent deep conditioning and nourishment to the scalp,” explains Dr. Shukla. Its growing popularity is due to its ability to restore moisture and improve hair texture.

Castor Oil: Strength Enhancer

Thick and sticky castor oil strengthens hair and reduces hair breakage. “Castor oil is best suited for very dry hair, not oily scalp,” warns Dr. Shukla.
