Two-wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association gave suggestions to the government. Demand for strict action against those manufacturing and selling poor quality helmets. The police should be empowered to identify and seize substandard helmets.
New Delhi. Wearing a helmet is legally mandatory for two-wheeler riders and is also necessary from the safety point of view. Many people consider wearing a helmet a hassle and buy it only to avoid challan. They neither look at the quality of the helmet nor do they think that a substandard helmet can prove fatal for them. According to a rough estimate, more than 25 percent of the helmets being sold in the country do not meet the prescribed standards. In view of this, the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association (THMA) has now given some suggestions to the government to stop the sale of fake and substandard helmets.
Rajeev Kapoor, President of the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association, says that the safety of two-wheeler riders is of utmost importance. The presence of fake and substandard helmets in the market not only undermines public safety but also reduces consumer confidence in quality products. Kapoor has urged the government to formulate a comprehensive strategy with strict regulations and run awareness campaigns on road safety.

Government should do this work
The association has demanded strict enforcement of “The Helmets for Riders of Two Wheeler Motor Vehicles (Quality Control) Order, 2020” from the government. This rule makes BIS mark mandatory on all helmets. Violators should be prosecuted under the BIS Act, 2016. The police should be empowered to identify and seize substandard helmets. Retail shops and manufacturing units should be inspected from time to time. Anyone who manufactures or sells substandard helmets should be heavily penalized. The association has also recommended a ban on the sale of helmets on the roadside.
This is how you can identify the real and fake
You should always buy ISI brand helmets. You should buy helmets from a shop that sells only helmets. It should have products from many companies. There are less chances of getting fake helmets at such a shop. Never fall for cheap prices. You will see many people selling helmets on the roadside. They sell helmets at very low prices. These people will sell you helmets worth Rs. 1000 for Rs. 500 to Rs. 700. Remember, no real helmet comes for Rs. 500.
Look at the helmet carefully. The material used in a poor quality helmet like cushion, lace or glass will be of low quality. Apart from this, it will not fit properly on the head. It will not be comfortable either. Yes, if a helmet seems light in weight to you, do not consider it to be poor. Because nowadays companies have started making high quality and light weight helmets.
