On a day when Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have joined hands for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, speculation is rife that Pawar political family patriarch and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar will team up with nephew Ajit for the Pune civic polls.
Ajit Pawar had dramatically broken ties with his uncle by forming an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2023, leading to the fall of the then government.
As the rumors swirled, NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule did not deny the reports outright but hinted that talks were definitely taking place. He said that his party will not move ahead with the alliance until all the doubts of the party workers are resolved.
He stressed that if both factions of NCP join hands then their ideology will not be compromised. Read this also How could Thackeray brothers’ reunion be a game-changer for BJP, Congress ahead of BMC polls?
Speaking to reporters in Pune, Supriya Sule said that she is in touch with the NCP and the possible consequences will also be discussed if both the NCP groups decide to join hands.
On his party’s city unit president Prashant Jagtap’s disappointment over a possible alliance with Ajit Pawar’s NCP for the January 15 municipal elections in Pune, Sule said he spoke to him in detail and understood his apprehensions.
He said, “Jagtap’s concerns were legitimate. His questions are absolutely legitimate.”
“There are ups and downs in politics. If we join hands with the NCP, no ideology or party policy will be compromised. I have given all these assurances. Nothing is lost in translation,” Sule said.
Supriya Sule further said, “These are only discussions. Dialogue and discussion are important in any strong democracy.”
Has Supriya spoken to cousin Ajit yet?
Supriya Sule said that she has not talked to Ajit Pawar yet.
“I will talk to Ajit Dada only after listening to all the party workers. I will not move ahead with any alliance until all doubts and apprehensions are resolved,” she said.
Elections for 29 civic corporations in the state, including Pune Municipal Corporation, will be held on January 15 and the votes will be counted the next day.
In the recently concluded municipal council and nagar panchayat elections in Maharashtra, the NCP won 966 seats, while the NCP (SP) won 256 seats.
