Congress President Malikarjun Kharge will decide the party’s candidates for Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, sources said on Saturday.
“All CEC [Central Election Committee] The leaders asked Kharge and Sonia Gandhi to field Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from two seats,” sources said.
Congress has not yet announced candidates for the high-profile Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats. Voting for two phases of Lok Sabha 2024 has been completed. The third phase of voting will take place on May 7. The elections will be held in seven phases and the results will be declared on June 4.
Amethi and Rae Bareli are the major seats
Both Amethi and Rae Bareli seats are important for Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress’s Rahul Gandhi was defeated by Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani from Amethi. BJP has again fielded Irani from this seat. Before the 2019 debacle, Amethi was a Congress stronghold.
The Rae Bareli seat has also been a Congress stronghold, with both Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi representing it since the 1960s. Sonia Gandhi has been the MP from this constituency since winning the 2006 by-election. This year Sonia Gandhi went to Rajya Sabha saying that she will not contest from the Lok Sabha seat this time.
Now there is speculation that Priyanka Gandhi may contest elections from Rae Bareli seat this time. His posters were seen in the constituency just before the Lok Sabha elections.
Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra had earlier also expressed his desire to contest elections from Amethi parliamentary seat. Later he said that the whole country wants him to enter active politics. He also said that the current MP from Amethi, Smriti Irani has not fulfilled her promises.
In the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting will be held on Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats on May 20.
