The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of promoting distrust in the country’s examination system after the NEET-UG paper was leaked in some places. The saffron party leaders have asked the Leader of Opposition (LoP) to apologise for his comments following the Supreme Court’s July 23 verdict ruling out holding the re-exam.
On July 23, the apex court had dismissed the petitions seeking cancellation and re-conduct of the exam, saying there was no evidence on record to conclude that it had been “vitiated” due to “systematic violation” of its sanctity. The court said the leak had taken place in a few cities.
A day after the verdict, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad hit out at opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, and accused them of defaming India’s exams globally over their comments on the NEET-UG controversy.
“His choice of words is a violation of the dignity of Parliament and the dignity of the post of the Leader of the Opposition,” Prasad said.
The former Union minister dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the Budget as a “kursi sakao budget” and said it was not the BJP’s fault if people had repeatedly rejected him and his party in elections.
Defending the government’s action on the NEET-UG controversy, the BJP leader said the investigation into the matter was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the candidature of 155 candidates was cancelled.
“More than 23.5 lakh students participated in it at 4,750 centres in 571 cities,” he said.
Prasad said Rahul Gandhi used words like “cheating” to attack the entire exam and now the court has made it clear that there has been no systemic breach of the sanctity of the exam.
“Will Rahul Gandhi apologise…,” he asked, claiming that incidents of paper leaks were common during Congress-led governments.
Prasad said that the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a strict law against incidents of paper leak.
Last month, amid the NEET UG controversy, the Centre passed the “Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024”. The law, which came into effect on June 21, aims to prevent the use of unfair means in public examinations and common entrance tests held across the country.
