The National Testing Agency (NTA) in an official press release issued clarifications regarding the recent queries and concerns raised by candidates who appeared for the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The exam was conducted by the NTA on May 5, 2024 from 2 PM to 5.20 PM at 4750 centres across 571 cities (including 14 cities abroad) for over 24 lakh candidates.
Candidates had raised concerns regarding the number of toppers this year, to which NTA responded that out of 67 candidates who scored 720/720 marks, 44 got compensatory marks due to correction in one of the answer keys of Physics and 06 got compensatory marks for loss of time.
“The cutoff scores are determined each year based on the overall performance of the candidates. The increase in the cutoff reflects the competitive nature of the examination and the higher performance standards achieved by the candidates this year,” NTA said in the press release.

The average marks scored by the qualified candidates out of 720 marks this year is 323.55, while it was 279.41 in 2023. The minimum marks to qualify in the UR category this year is 164, while it was 137 in 2023.
NTA also responded that some of the candidates who appeared for NEET UG 2024 have filed writ petitions before the Hon’ble High Court of Punjab & Haryana, Delhi and Chhattisgarh, raising concerns about loss of examination time during the conduct of NEET (UG) 2024 on 05.05.2024 at some examination centres.
NTA said, “The loss of exam time was ascertained and such candidates were compensated with marks based on their answering ability and time lost, as per the mechanism/formula laid down by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in its judgment dated 13.06.2018 in WP 551 of 2018. 1563 candidates were compensated for loss of time and the revised marks of such candidates vary from -20 to 720 marks. Out of these, the marks of two candidates are also 718 and 719 marks respectively due to compensatory marks.”
