The grass is greener during the weekend, and the countdown to the weekend provides enough motivation to get through the day. Friday evening feels like crossing the finish line. Ripping the finishing line ribbon is like a brief respite from the week’s tiring marathon. The weekend brings all the postponed fun and daydreams to life; for some, it’s catching up on chores, hanging out with friends, or simply relaxing and watching their favorite shows. The week’s quota of fun is reserved for Saturday, which is a safe day between Friday evening fun and lazy Sunday. Saturday gets Friday’s adrenaline, and Sunday gets a chance to relax and recharge. But is Sunday really that sunny?

Don't let Sunday get you caught in a spiral of apathy.
Don’t let Sunday get you caught in a spiral of apathy.

An uneasy dread sets in as the sun sets on Sunday and you find yourself back at the drawing board, at the foot of yet another Everest of work to climb in the coming week. The dread of the week ahead is so disturbing that Sunday becomes a madhouse of anxiety and sadness. It is like a dark shadow lurking at the periphery of your vision, reminding you of the fleeting nature of the weekend. Haunted by Sunday dread, the weekend shrinks to just one day, and Sunday becomes a buffer day for sinking into an existential crisis as you head back to the starting line. But here are a few ways you can ensure your Sunday is not stolen and you stay stress-free.

Effective steps to recover and relax on Sunday

Identify triggers

Introspect on your work-life balance and see how you can improve it, to avoid that panic at the start of the week.

Sunday may be a dreaded day for you as the new week brings with it unpleasantness or anxiety arising from work or personal issues. Find out what is really bothering you, and develop a strategy to prepare for it in advance.

Liven up your weekdays

Don’t save the fun for the weekend. Storing all the thrills and happiness for the weekend creates imbalance and makes the transition from an exciting weekend to monotonous weekdays even more challenging. Celebrate small victories, or maybe plan an evening out on a weekday.

Have something you look forward to, like getting your best friend from work some new tea on Monday or visiting a new bookstore when you get home on Tuesday. Don’t put off fun until the end of the week, when every day can be filled with fulfillment and satisfaction. Life is a ticking bomb, and you never know when it might explode for you. Keeping yourself alive and motivated with a countdown is not really the way to move forward. Maybe your countdown is before your weekend countdown. So live your weekdays like your weekend.

Enjoy the weekends as well

The fear of Sunday lies in lying in bed and fulfilling the responsibilities of the new week.

Having all the fun on Saturday will make you feel tired on Sunday. Plan your weekend by dividing your work and leisure activities equally so that you do not have to face Saturday fatigue on Sunday. A part of Sunday anxiety also arises from highly eventful Saturdays.

Humans are vessels of experiences and emotions, and when they get full, they need to be released. Writing down your thoughts brings clarity and calms the turmoil in your mind. It helps you prioritize and plan better. Interacting with multiple stimuli every day and experiencing subtle stressors can lead to confusion. By releasing the emotional build-up, you feel better prepared to tackle the week ahead. If you are not a very good writer, take up a therapeutic hobby like baking, cycling, yoga, painting, etc. Engaging in activities that rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit can help you maintain a sense of balance and well-being.

End your Sunday on a positive note

Grab some popcorn and enjoy a good movie - a great way to end a Sunday.

Don’t let Sunday dread become an every weekend ritual. Break this pattern before it becomes an inevitable part of you. Go beyond your regular skin care routine and pamper yourself on Sunday evenings. Alternatively, end the day with a good book or enjoy a movie marathon of old classics. As they say, all’s well that ends well. Gratitude and satisfaction at the end of your weekend gives you good energy to start Monday with a bright smile.
