Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, political parties in India are putting their best foot forward, and it is expected that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is taking the lead. A day after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav took a ‘family’ dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP reiterated its 2019 Lok Sabha strategy to counter Lalu Prasad Yadav’s attack.
“This Narendra Modi is attacking nepotism these days. First, you should explain why you do not have any children or family. For people having more children, he (PM Modi) says that this is dynasty politics. You don’t have any family…you are not even a Hindu. Every Hindu shaves his head to mourn the death of his mother. Deja vu moment for India alliance
During the high-intensity campaign ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, then Congress president Rahul Gandhi attacked the PM Modi-led NDA-1 government on various issues including crony capitalism and irregularities in the Rafale aircraft deal.
In a bold move, Rahul Gandhi raised the “chowkidar chor hai” slogan against Prime Minister Modi and his government.
The BJP knew better than to react aggressively against this slogan and pulled off what is called a “masterstroke” in the parlance of BJP supporters. All BJP politicians, especially the party’s top leadership and Lok Sabha candidates, changed the name of their exes. Former Twitter handle and added “Main Bhi Chowkidar” after his name. This was the beginning of the BJP’s “Main Bhi Chowkidar” campaign and it worked wonders for the party in effectively avoiding the sharp attacks of the Congress.
This time too, in an unexpected moment for the Congress-led Bharat faction, the BJP jumped to capitalize on Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ‘family’ comment as all BJP leaders added “Modi’s family” before their names. The party said that 140 crore people of this country are PM Modi’s family and even those who have no one belong to Modi and Modi belongs to them.
Like 2019, this appears to be the beginning of a major campaign to arouse sentiments for PM Modi’s image, which could translate into a massive mandate for the BJP-led NDA in the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
