Ottawa. After the death of Alexei Navalny, a staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it a tragedy. Trudeau strongly attacked Russian President Putin and said that this incident made it clear what a big ‘monster’ Russian President Vladimir Putin is. “This really shows how far Putin … will go to crack down on anyone who fights for the freedom of the Russian people,” Trudeau told Canadian public television CBC. And this is something that is reminding the whole world what a monster Putin really is.
Earlier, Russian officials had said that 47-year-old Navalny had died suddenly in the Arctic prison. The surprise announcement comes as Putin prepares to extend his two-decade grip on power through a government-run presidential election expected to be held in March. Navalny, a charismatic lawyer, was widely seen as Russia’s major opposition leader and the only politician capable of drawing huge crowds and taking on 71-year-old Putin.
Navalny’s ‘extraordinary courage’ praised
Speaking to a group of Canadian business leaders, Trudeau praised Navalny’s “extraordinary courage” in standing up for basic freedoms, for democracy. He urged Canadians to ‘double and triple’ their resolve to uphold these values and take action against Putin, particularly in relation to Ukraine.

Trudeau also clashed with PM Modi
Earlier, Trudeau had also clashed with Indian PM Narendra Modi. Justin Trudeau had accused India of playing a role in the murder of designated terrorist pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Due to which relations between the two countries became tense. Months later, Trudeau announced an investigation into New Delhi’s alleged interference in the federal elections held in the country in 2019 and 2021. The Foreign Interference Commission, set up last year by the Trudeau government to investigate interference by foreign governments in the last two federal elections in Canada, on Tuesday said it will also investigate India’s alleged interference in the elections.
