In Islam, there is a custom of counting the teeth of the goat before sacrificing it on Bakrid. This is done to find out the age of the goat. Only one-year-old goats are sacrificed on Bakrid, that is, they are neither newborn nor old.
How many teeth does a goat have that is sacrificed?
Before sacrificing a goat, its teeth are counted. When a goat has 4-6 teeth, it is considered to be 1 year old. If it has less than this, it cannot be sacrificed. If a goat has more than 6 teeth, it cannot be sacrificed.
Why is Bakrid celebrated?
It is celebrated in memory of the sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim’s son Ismail for Allah. This is a way of showing that Hazrat Ibrahim believed in Allah the most. Actually, to show his faith in Allah, he had to sacrifice his son Ismail. As soon as he raised his sword to do so, by divine power, instead of his son, a Dumba (a species similar to sheep) came there and it was sacrificed. Today, on the basis of this story, animal sacrifice is done.
