The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday declared former district president VV Rajesh as its candidate for the post of mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, which the party recently won for the first time, ending 45 years of Left rule.
Woman councilor Asha Nath will be the party’s candidate for Deputy Mayor. The names were announced by party state general secretary S Suresh at a meeting of newly elected BJP councilors of the corporation and district leaders of the party.
The election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor is to be held today.
The decision was taken after lengthy discussions within the state and district leadership of the party. Earlier, the discussion was focused on retired DGP R Sreelekha as a possible mayoral candidate, but a section of the party is understood to have opposed his elevation.

“On behalf of every worker, I thank them for their support,” he said.
The BJP won control of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation with 50 seats, breaking the Left’s stronghold of four decades. The Congress-led UDF also made significant gains by doubling its number of seats. Thiruvananthapuram ultimately swung in favor of the BJP in the triangular contest.
Who is VV Rajesh?
Rajesh, 50, is currently a councilor in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and is serving his second term in the House. In the recently held Kerala local body elections, Rajesh won from Kodunganur ward by a margin of 515 votes.
In 2021, Rajesh contested the Kerala Assembly elections from Vattiyoorkavu seat as a BJP candidate. He secured 39,596 votes and stood second behind CPI(M)’s VK Prashant, who secured 61,111 votes and won by a margin of 21,515 votes.
The BJP has wrested control of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, breaking the Left’s stronghold of four decades.
Rajesh, a lawyer by profession, is a senior party leader who serves as the state secretary of the BJP. He has previously served as Thiruvananthapuram District President and State President of BJP Yuva Morcha.
Rajesh started his political career in 1996 and has been active in politics for almost three decades. His long association with the party and experience in organizational roles has shaped his journey in public life, leading to his promotion as the Thiruvananthapuram mayoral candidate.
