JDU candidate from Mokama and local strongman Anant Singh has been made an accused in the murder case of Jan Suraj supporter Dular Chand Yadav.
Anant Singh alias ‘Chhote Sarkar’, who was trying to regain the Mokama seat on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JDU ticket, was arrested early Sunday in connection with the case.
He was named, along with four others, in an FIR lodged based on a complaint by Yadav’s grandson.

Anant Singh is reportedly the most enduring, yet controversial politician of Bihar. The life of the quintessential “Baahubali” Singh is indirectly linked to the volatile history of the Mokama assembly constituency.
The gangster-turned-politician, a native of Nadwan village, belongs to the influential Bhumihar community – a background that has helped him in his political endeavours, ensuring his decades-long dominance.
Anant Singh is known worldwide by the nickname “Chhote Sarkar”, reflecting his formidable political and criminal dominance in the region. He achieved his first major victory in 2005 by winning the Mokama seat on a Janata Dal (United) ticket.
He has since maintained a nearly two-decade-long winning streak, winning five consecutive times under different party banners, including contesting elections as an independent and with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) before his recent return to the JDU.
The Singh family’s strong hold on Mokama has been one of the defining features of Bihar’s political story since the 1990s. Before him, his elder brother Dilip Singh was holding the Mokama seat.
According to political observers, Anant Singh’s political and criminal hold on the area often outweighs the state administration. His public persona is a mix of timid and flamboyant.
Baahubali is also famous for his eccentric lifestyle, which reportedly includes maintaining an extensive collection of livestock, including expensive horses and a pet python. He prefers to use an old buggy instead of a car for transportation.
Anant Singh has a lot of assets, even more assets have been mentioned in the recent election affidavit. He has further inflated the joint family assets by adding Rs 37 crore to himself and his wife’s assets, against which he has also declared significant liabilities.
Anant Singh’s criminal record
Ananth Singh’s criminal record is one of the most notable aspects of the politician who is currently in legal trouble over the Yadav murder case. His election affidavit historically lists dozens of criminal cases, including charges related to murder, kidnapping and extortion.
His extensive and serious criminal record reflects a history of using muscle to impose political will in a region riven by caste-based conflict.
Despite this dangerous history, Anant Singh has recently faced major punishment – a conviction under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has seen him disqualified from the Assembly in 2022.
However, he was recently acquitted by the Patna High Court, allowing him to make an immediate political comeback on the JD(U) ticket for the current elections.
Notably, even when he was in jail, his influence was so strong that his wife Neelam Devi successfully contested and won the subsequent by-election.
