Railway tracks were laid for long distances all over the world, to make it easier for passengers to go from one place to another. They can reach their destination on time. For this, America, China, Russia and India have the strongest railway network, which is considered the longest. America has the longest railway network of 2.5 lakh kilometres, while China has 1 lakh kilometres. Russia is at third place with 85 thousand 500 kilometers and India is at fourth place with 65 thousand kilometers. But these have become the countries with the largest railways. But do you know about the country with the shortest railway line?
Surely you wouldn’t know. But let us tell you that Vatican City, which is counted among the smallest country in the world, has the shortest railway line, whose total length is only 300 meters. Such a distance that you can cover it even on foot within 2 minutes. But no permanent passenger train runs on this railway track. This track has been made only for goods trains. It has only one railway station, named Citta Vaticana. This railway line was opened in 1934.
This railway line in Vatican City connects to Roma San Pietro railway station in Italy after 300 meters. However, for the first time in 2015, a passenger train started running from Città Vaticano railway station, which runs every Saturday. This train used to go to Castle Gandolfo in Italy. But mostly only freight trains run on this track.

How did the train start?
In the 19th century, there was a plan to connect the Papal States by railway, but Pope Gregory XVI put a stop to it. He believed that the iron road was the road to hell. However, after his death in 1846, his successor Pope Pius IX began construction of a rail line, but before it could be completed the area was captured by forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1860. Almost 70 years later, the construction of a railway station in Vatican City and its connection to Italian rail lines was guaranteed by the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929.
The first train reached Vatican City in 1932
The track was ready 3 years after the treaty connecting the railway lines of Italy and Vatican City. In March 1932 the first locomotive-hauled train entered Vatican City. However, the station was officially opened on 2 October 1934. At the same time, the station building was constructed between 1929 and 1933, which is made of white marble. One part of the station building is used as a passenger station and goods office, while the other part now houses the Vatican Numismatics and Philatelic Museum.
