The kidneys are among our body’s most efficient organs and play a vital role in managing the levels of many substances in the body, removing waste products and toxins, producing urine, and even controlling blood pressure. The kidneys, located behind the stomach on either side of the body, help balance the levels of vitamins, amino acids, glucose, hormones and other vital substances in the bloodstream. The kidneys perform a variety of functions, including filtering the blood to remove waste products such as urea and creatinine. They are also helpful in maintaining bone health and producing blood.

What is chronic kidney disease?

“Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unfortunately a progressive condition. Over time almost all patients reach a stage where they require either dialysis or a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, CKD has no obvious symptoms until does not occur until the disease has progressed significantly. Even if symptoms are present, the patient may not realize that they are caused by CKD. So CKD is missed in the early stages in most patients. But it is important to know “If diagnosed early, progression to CKD can be considered,” says Dr Shashi Kiran A, Consultant Nephrologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad.

Kidney disease symptoms to watch out for

According to Dr. Shashi, here are the following signs that may be present in the early stages of CKD and should be actively looked for to diagnose the disease early.

1. Loss of appetite and nausea: People lose interest in food and when forced to eat, they feel nauseous. Over time they may start to lose weight.

2. Swelling in the legs or around the eyes: Sitting for long periods of time can cause your feet to swell. Most patients may notice it at the end of their day or a few hours after a trip. Swelling can be seen around the eyes in the morning.

3. Easy Fatigue: People with kidney disease may find that their energy levels are lower and they are more rested.

4. Nocturnal: Patients may notice that they urinate more frequently at night than during the day.

5. Change in sleep pattern: They may experience a day-night condition, not being able to sleep at night but feeling sleepy in the morning.

6. Lack of concentration: Patients may find it difficult to concentrate on their studies or work.

7. High Blood Pressure: Most patients with CKD either have high blood pressure or develop high blood pressure early in their course.

None of the above symptoms should be ignored as early detection of chronic kidney disease can help significantly reduce the chances of progression.
