On Tuesday, there was a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the eastern Papua region of Indonesia. The earthquake caused vibrations in the entire area. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at around 5:24 pm on August 12 (08:24 GMT) and its center was located about 193 km north-west from Abepura city of Papua.
Actually, earthquakes often occur in Indonesia. Indonesia is the country where most Muslim people live. It is located between two major tectonic plates- the Australian plates and the recently separated Sunda plate.
Indonesia’s tectonics is very complex, as it is a meeting point of many tectonic plates. Indonesia is located between the two continental plates- Sahul Shelf and Sunda Plate, and two ocean plates- the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate.
A day before this, an earthquake occurred in Turkey on 11 August. Balikasir, a northwest province of Türkiye, had an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude, killing a person. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), he died after saving an 81 -year -old man in the earthquake. Many people were injured and more than 15 buildings fell.
