Singapore. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said Article 370 was a temporary provision and it prevented very progressive laws from being extended to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Addressing members of the Indian community in Singapore, Jaishankar said that the benefits of change are now visible. The minister said Article 370 was a temporary provision of the Indian Constitution and extending it led to two things, which caused harm to us as a nation.
He said, “One, it created an ethos of separatism, violence and terrorism which created problems for the security of the entire country. Second, it prevented the very progressive laws at that time from being extended to Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.”
In August 2019, the government abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution, revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and divided the state into two union territories. To a question, the Foreign Minister said, “Today, you can see the benefits of the changes that have taken place.” Jaishankar is in Singapore on a three-day visit from Saturday.
