Researchers in Spain may have found one of the oldest symbolic objects with human fingerprint recorded in Europe. Small pebbles discovered in San Lajaro Rock Shelter in Segovia can be connected to Nendarthal.
Experts believe that it shows that Neandarthal may have created symbolic art like cave paintings. The pebble was found under the soil 1.5 meters during 2022 excavation.
Forensic experts helped to study prints. This discovery supports the idea that Neandarthal, who lived 40,000 years ago, was more like modern humans, as much as we believed.
Scientists now believe that once thought near Neandarthal. Pebble with red ocher shows that they can see the face in objects, as if we see the shape in the clouds. This shows that they may have symbolic thinking.
Experts say that the gap between modern humans and Niendarthal is getting smaller. Forensic equipment will now help find more hidden clues than the past.
“When we first saw (pebble) … we were looking at stone, all teams and students, and we were like ‘Uh, it looks like a face,” CNN quoted the study’s Koathor Maria de Andres Herroor.
A team led by Herroo found a 43,000 -year -old ancient fingerprint on a pebble, probably left by an Niandarthal. It had no clear use, but was a strange red dot.
Curious, Herero contacted fingerprint experts of Madrid Police. However, the first suspect, the forensic team confirmed a fingerprint using special cameras and multisactral analysis.
This was the first time such modern technologies helped identify an Niendarthal print. This discovery was also surprising for experts. They usually work with days or week old prints, not thousands of years.
Oldest fingerprint
This can be the oldest full fingerprint ever from a early human being. The fingerprint had a red ocher pigment on it, showing that the person may have used color on the purpose.
Experts say that the mark was deliberately made, not from the accident. It can also be the oldest associated with the use of print pigment.
Can look like a human face with hollow eyes, mouth and chin. The red dot can mark the nose. Researchers believe that this pebble can carry a symbolic message.
“A meaning or message exists, although the object and action may appear simple,” the study states.
