For the last few days, there is a lot of hurdle regarding ethanol blended petrol E-20. People are saying that the use of this petrol has reduced the mileage of their car. Some experts say that E-20 petrol is affecting the engine of old vehicles. Meanwhile, keeping in mind the big questions of the people, the Government of India itself has come forward and replied. The government gave a detailed answer to the questions raised about the mileage of vehicles and the effects on life on 4 August 2025. Told how this step is important towards achieving the target of Net Zero emissions by 2070, especially by 2070, India’s environment. So let’s know all the important questions and answers given by their government.
1: What is the purpose of ethanol mixture in petrol?
The biggest objective of adding ethanol to petrol is that we reduce the smoke emanating from the vehicles, reduce the dependence on foreign countries on crude oil and reach the village -farmer’s direct money. India has targeted the net zero emission by 2070, and the government considers ethanol and natural gas to be clean fuel. By adding ethanol up to 20% in petrol, the same work is done, which is done by saving a little in everyday budget. Gradually, a big effect is seen. The air is clear, imports decrease and farmers’ income increases.
2: What are the environmental benefits of E-20 petrol?
E-20 in terms of environment means low greenhouse gases and more clean fuel burning process, which is called Combusation. The study of NITI Aayog, ranging from crop growth to fuel burning, has said that the greenhouse gas emission of sugarcane is about 65 percent less than petrol and about 50 percent less of maize-based ethanol. The ministry has also clarified that E-20 gives “carbon” emissions about 30% less than E-20, E-10. Not only this, the arrival of ethanol increases the octane level of petrol, the combination is better and harmful gases decrease.
3: How do farmers benefit from ethanol mixture?
Between 2014-15 to 2024-25 (from July 2025), domestic ethanol was used by saving more than Rs 1.44 lakh crore in foreign currency in foreign currency and domestic ethanol instead of millions of crude oil tons. In the ongoing ethanol year, only the level of 20% mixture is estimated to pay about Rs 40,000 crore in this year and Forex savings worth about Rs 43,000 crore. The money which used to go into crude oil imports earlier, is now being given by making the “Annadata” that grows sugarcane -makka “energetic”.
4: E-20 affects the mileage and performance of vehicles?
According to the government and auto industry trials, most of the old vehicles made for E-10 have “minor” deficiency in mileage, and vehicles which are tune or suitable for E-20 do not have the question of decline in mileage. By the way, if seen, the mileage of the vehicle decreases when the air filter is dirty or a sharp break -excellence. The octane of the E-20 is stated to be around 108.5, which reduces knocking. This improves pick-up and smoothness.
5: Has vehicle manufacturers tuned for E-20?
The government had prepared it long ago. Vehicle manufacturers have also been preparing for this change for years. Models of many companies have been favorable to E-20 since 2009, so that the engine-function system works correctly even if the adulteration of ethanol in fuel. If your vehicle is old, then maximum may have to be done that some rubber parts or gaskets in the fuel line should be replaced ahead of time. This work is done at low cost in regular servicing.
6: Should E-20 petrol be cheaper?
In 2020-21, the situation was such that ethanol used to be cheaper than petrol. But ethanol prices have increased over time. As of 31 July 2025, the average ethanol procurement of OMCS is around Rs 71.32 per liter (including transportation and GST), which is above the cost of refined petrol in today’s scenario. Nevertheless, oil companies do not back down from the blending program, because it provides energy security, farmers’ income becomes durable and the environment benefits.
7: E-20 affects the insurance of vehicles?
Rumors affected on insurance are baseless. The Ministry of Petroleum has clearly stated that using E-20 does not affect the validity of vehicle insurance. There are some misleading screenshots on social media, about which the truth companies themselves have released. Therefore, if your policy is valid and the vehicle is getting regular service, then there is no change in insurance only by filling E-20.
8: Will India grow beyond E-20?
Currently, the government’s roadmap is focused on E-20 by 31 October 2026 and the decision to move forward will be only after detailed study and consultation. The average mixture in the ethanol supply year 2024-25 was 19.05 percent by 31 July 2025 and reached 19.93% in the month of July. Currently, its technological and economical assessments are going on.
9: What does the experience of countries like Brazil say?
The experience of Brazil is often given as an example. Since 2015, it has been mandatory to add 27 percent ethanol to ordinary petrol and in 2025 the government decided to increase it by 30%. This was done after extensive tests. Interestingly, the same automakers Toyota, Honda, Hyundai etc. also make vehicles there and vehicles have been running on high blend fuel for a long time.
10: What are the solutions for old vehicles?
If some parts of rubber (eg fuel hose, o-ring, gasket) in a car are seen rubbing them rapidly with E-20, then replace them with new E-20 tund parts. This work is mostly done at a low cost of service centers, servicing time and usually the vehicle does not require more than once. Meanwhile, there are BIS and automotive industry standard for fuel quality and testing, so that the consumer gets reliable fuel.
11: Is the government taking care of the interests of consumers?
The government has said that the customer’s interests are at the top, moving towards clean and durable fuel. Official clarifications have been issued to remove confusion about insurance, mileage and performance, standard fixed, and network of automobile service stations is available for help. In simple words, if you feel that your car needs to be a little tuning or any part, then you get a solution easily by meeting the authorized workshop.
