Referring to North Korea’s western port city, a military officer said, “North Korea is building a 4,000-ton frigate in Nampho. “From the size of the ship, it is being estimated that it is capable of carrying (ship-to-land) missiles.” However, the official said that it may take several years for North Korea to build this warship. It may take more than 10 years to deploy the warship operationally.
North Korea’s largest ship to date is a 1,500-ton frigate, which is equipped with ship-to-ship missiles. It does not have vertical launching system. Vertical Launching System (VLS) is an advanced system for placing and firing missiles on submarines and ships. People’s Power Party representative Yu Yong-wen said that this warship is a warship weighing 5,000 tons, which looks more like a Chinese warship rather than a Russian warship. He said that North Korea had unveiled the bottom of this warship for the first time in a photo taken during Kim’s inspection in September.
During the visit to the shipyard, Kim said strengthening the naval force is the most important matter to firmly safeguard the country’s maritime sovereignty and enhance war preparedness at present. Yu Yong-wen said the frigate has yet to be equipped with combat systems, but expressed concern that it could emerge as a new threat due to its capabilities to launch surface-to-surface missiles from the ship.
