It’s very hot and dealing with heat and acne is one of the beauty issues people are facing. “I have been battling dry and brittle hair since April and at first I thought I would change my conditioner, but it didn’t help,” says corporate executive Shaina Advani. If you feel the same, your hair might be getting damaged by the sun’s rays. It’s time to use sunscreen for hair. Dr Nishita Ranka, dermatologist and founder of a clinic for skin, hair and beauty, says, “Yes, hair and scalp benefit from SPF protection. Hair may be less susceptible to direct damage than skin, but prolonged UV exposure can cause significant damage.”
How bad could it be?
Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause severe damage to hair in multiple ways.

Dr. Ranka explains, “First, there is protein degradation. Hair is primarily made up of keratin, which is a structural protein. UV radiation, especially UVA, can break down the disulfide bonds in keratin, leading to hair weakness, brittleness, and split ends.” She adds, “You also face color fading, especially colored hair which is particularly vulnerable to UV damage. There is also scalp damage and lipid peroxidation, where UV radiation can initiate lipid peroxidation in the hair cuticle, leading to a loss of natural oils. This makes hair dry and frizzy.”
Dealing with the problem
Sunscreens are formulations that provide protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, particularly UVA and UVB rays. “They contain active ingredients that act as chemical filters, absorbing UV radiation and turning it into harmless heat or act as physical filters, repelling UV radiation away from the skin and hair (such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide),” says Dr. Ranka. Sunscreens are available today in the form of creams, sprays, gels, and lotions and are also being used in hair care products to provide comprehensive protection.
