As winter approaches, Nagaland transforms into a celebration of its culture and color year after year, courtesy of the Hornbill Festival. If you’re planning to go there to enjoy the natural scenery, don’t just stop there! Like we said, go for the Hornbill Festival, stay for everything else Nagaland has to offer.

Hornbill Festival: An absolute must
Every December, the tribes of Nagaland gather for the Hornbill Festival, a vibrant display of music, dance, cuisine and traditional stories that honor the iconic Great Hornbill, which has served for generations as a symbol of love, bravery and good luck. Activities include folk performances, traditional games such as Naga wrestling and archery and interactive tribal morang as well as modern elements such as concerts, fashion shows and competitions. Held at Kisama Heritage Village, the primary objective of the Hornbill Festival is to preserve Naga heritage along with promoting inter-tribe unity.
everything else
October to March is actually the best time to visit Nagaland, giving you great weather and plenty of options for sightseeing in one day. The Government Circuit Houses are highly recommended, although the capital Kohima certainly has its own range of high-end hotels and resorts.
As far as food is concerned, you’ll be hard-pressed to choose between pork, rice, smoked meats and fermented ingredients like akuni and anishi. Smoked pork, often prepared with bamboo shoots or bitter eggplant, is a must try and galho which is a mixture of rice, vegetables and meat. End the day on a sweet note with the always famous Nap Nang, sticky black rice pudding.
Along with sightseeing, take a nature walk. Breathe in the fresh air at the Phek and Triple Waterfalls, Shiloi, Dzudu and Totsu Wozhu lakes as well as the Doyang and Dikhu rivers. Natangaki National Park and sanctuaries like Fakim, Rangpahad, Khonoma Nature Reserve and Tragopan Sanctuary, Singphan and Puli Badze will also leave you spellbound.
Add some variety to your day.
Are you ready to say ‘allo’ this December?
