When his eyesight became weak, Manu Garg started looking at life from a new perspective. At the age of 23, she excelled in the 2024 Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination and secured 91st rank. The remarkable thing is that he achieved this success without learning Braille script.
Garg lost his eyesight in Class 8 due to a rare genetic disease, but he did not let this setback deter him. She studied using screen readers, audio PDFs and other digital tools with her mother Vandana Jain providing her unwavering support by reading books, preparing notes and visiting Delhi with her.
After receiving his early education at St. He earned a master’s degree in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and laid a solid foundation for his academic career by scoring 99.1 percent in the UGC NET examination. He also obtained a PhD.
While studying at Hindu College, Garg started preparing for UPSC during the lockdown. In 2023, he cleared Prelims but did not crack Mains. However, in 2024, he modified his strategy and this time, he not only cleared the mains exam but also excelled in the interview.
Garg’s mother became his biggest strength. Although he never learned Braille, the technology helped him assimilate the curriculum. Finding a reliable writer for the mains exam was challenging, but friends helped him. His mother supported him by writing down the answers suggested by Garg, which helped him improve. He believes that if he can give back even 10% of what his mother did for him, his life will be considered successful.
