Uniform Civil Code implemented in Uttarakhand: Big change on marriage and live-in

There has been a lot of talk about the same citizen code, but after its implementation, what will be the effect of it, how will they influence the people living in married couples or live-in lovers, let us understand it.

What is the Uniform Civil Code (UCC)?
The Uniform Civil Code is a law that tries to create an uniform legal structure for all citizens, whether they are from any religion or community. Its purpose is to make various personal laws related to marriage, divorce, property rights, heir, and adoption. Its main objective is to bring equality and ensure that all citizens run under the same law.

The main features of the UCC of Uttarakhand

1. Need for marriage and registration: Marriage and live-in relationships will be registered in Uttarakhand’s UCC. This will give legal recognition of relationships and will provide security to citizens.

2. Polligomy (multi-vegetable) and ban on child marriage: This new law will impose strict restrictions on polligom and child marriage. This step is to protect women’s rights and good children.

3. Legal age of marriage: So far, the age of marriage for the girl in the country is 18 and 21 years for the boy. But under UCC, the legal age of marriage has been fixed at 21 years, which is the same for both sexes. The purpose of this is that people are well educated and mentally prepared before getting married.

4. Live-in Relationship: An important aspect of UCC is about live-in relationships. After the same civilian code of marriage, all live-in relationships will be registration of relationships. If the people involved in the live-in relationship are under 21 years of age, then their parents’ consent will be necessary. If someone does not register these relationships or gives wrong information, he can be sentenced to three months, fine of ₹ 25,000, or both.

5. The scope of law: This law will not only apply to the residents of Uttarakhand, but it will also apply to the people living outside the state, who are in live-in relationships. Its purpose is to ensure equality and consistency.

Implementing the Uniform Civil Code was one of the major promises of BJP and the fulfillment of this promise from Uttarakhand has started. This was a big issue in the assembly elections of 2022.
