The aim of the Central Board of Secondary Education is now to focus on the skills and abilities of children, so that they can think critically, analyze information and solve problems effectively. The curriculum and teaching methodology will be driven by real understanding and understanding and more emphasis will be laid on how children learn. This change in approach will bring a big change in providing a holistic learning experience to children, making them better prepared for higher education.
To develop the future ‘think tanks’ of the nation and meet the goals of the 21st century, the Central Board emphasizes on creative, acute and analytical thinking abilities of students. Over the years, the Board has taken countless steps towards the implementation of competency based education in schools, which includes linking assessment with competencies, development of ideal resources for teachers as well as students and continuous capacity building programs to enhance the knowledge of teachers across India.
With the goal of developing holistic, inquiry-based, discovery-based and discussion-based learning of the student as well as conceptual clarity, CBSE has planned classroom teaching with experiential learning including practical activities, arts and sports integrated curriculum and pedagogy, storytelling as an integral part of following teaching, standard teaching within each subject, and exploring the relationship between different subjects. To reduce the gap in achieving the learning outcome, the transactions in the classroom will drive competency-based learning and education. The assessment tools will also be aligned with the learning outcome, abilities and dispositions specified class-wise for each subject.
Competency based questions are a means of developing real-life concepts of students. Hence, Central Board of Secondary Education has upgraded its percentage in order to align the assessment and evaluation practices with NEP-2020 for the academic session 2024-2025 as given below:

The exact number of percentage of competency-based questions will become clear with the release of the 2024-2025 sample question papers and QP design of individual subjects.
CBSE Exam Pattern 2024-25 will implement changes in the exam format for Classes 11 and 12 starting from the academic year 2024-25, thereby focusing on assessing in-depth understanding of concepts and discouraging rote learning. This new pattern will focus on questions assessing the conceptual ability of students and its application in solving real-life problems. This new pattern will align well with the New Education Policy. The CBSE Class 11 and 12 exam pattern will have the following changes:
- More Competency-Based Questions
- Including Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Less emphasis on traditional answer types
With the appropriate and timely changes made by CBSE, it is clear that capacity building of teachers in schools will require more focus and investment of resources. Unless teachers adapt to these changes, the desired and necessary changes within the system in terms of delivering curriculum to students cannot be made smoothly.
Students will need a lot of regular practice to get used to the changed format of questions, which also means that studying the concepts in detail will be the main factor in scoring good marks in MCQs. Long answer questions are where students can score better marks as compared to MCQs where answers may be awarded zero or full marks, leaving very little scope for making mistakes. A thorough study of the textbooks along with clarity of concepts will enable the child to perform well in their exams.
Not only is it difficult at times to give a marker but it is also difficult to answer when there are multiple options to choose from. If the teacher has been successful in explaining the concepts to the students, then no question is difficult to answer. This will enhance their skill set to give competitive exams in a better way.
Over the years, CBSE has strived to bring about continuous and positive changes in terms of new age subjects and also changes in the pattern of questions asked in the Board exams, which is a result of their in-depth research and careful and regular feedback received from education experts across the country.
In an effort to provide flexibility, CBSE has also announced the option of two board exams every year from the upcoming academic session 2024-25, giving students the opportunity to take board exams twice a year, while also getting a chance to improve their scores. Taking into account the high stress associated with board exams every year, the best of the two scores will be considered for their college admissions.
In its noble effort to be inclusive, CBSE has allowed and accepted multiple languages as the medium of instruction. Students have the freedom to choose the medium of instruction from multiple (twenty-two) regional languages for better understanding of concepts and better results.
In conclusion, we are all happy to acknowledge and realize that these relevant changes brought by CBSE will have a positive impact on the upcoming batch along with its close integration with NEP which will result in a change in the mindset of schools, how schools plan their teacher training and capacity building workshops, how mentors guide their protégés and children will learn by focusing more on understanding the concepts rather than rote learning which will be beneficial for them in their individual education journey.
