Any qualified film analyst will tell you that it’s impossible to predict what will make a movie work. Some argue it’s the stars, others swear by the importance of the story, while others still claim it’s the presentation. Maybe it’s a combination of all of these. Otherwise, how can one explain two films with the same story and characters getting such different responses? One is considered a cult classic with the highest ratings for any Indian film, while the other has been called one of the worst Bollywood films of all time and was a box office bomb. ,Also read: Singham Again writer reacts to allegations that the film cashes in on Ramayana as a Diwali marketing strategy,
two movies with same story
The epic Ramayana has featured in many films in India over the years. Apart from Ramanand Sagar’s iconic shows, more than three dozen films have been made on the epic in different languages. Among them, even the highest-rated is not live-action or entirely made in India. The film is Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, a joint Indo-Japanese anime made in 1992. Made in both English and Hindi, the film has an IMDb rating of 9.2 out of 10, the highest for any Indian film.
On the other hand, the nadir of Ramayana adaptation in India came three decades later when Om Raut made Adipurush. Billed as the most expensive Indian film ever made (with reported budget). 55 crore), Adipurush received a tsunami of negative reviews from both fans and critics. This reduced its box office prospects. According to trade experts, the film has suffered a lot of loss. 220 crores at the box office, seriously underperforms.
what went right and what went wrong
The Legend of Prince Rama is considered a case study in how to adapt the Ramayana for Indian audiences. Like Adipurush, it narrates a small part of the Ramayana – from the exile to the death of Ravana. But it does this directly while still maintaining the simplicity and essence of the original text. Critics have also praised the voice actors, especially bringing back Arun Govil as Lord Ram and casting Amrish Puri as Ravana. But audiences believe that what attracted them to the anime was the animation style, which captured the spirit of Ramayana well. Despite never being released in India, the film is considered a cult classic and has been telecast countless times on Doordarshan. The film is finally releasing in India later this month.
Whatever The Legend of Prince Ram got right, Adipurush got it wrong. The film was criticized for everything from its casting (Prabhas did not have the calmness of Lord Ram) to the dialogue (which was described as poor). Even the epic visual presentation was criticized and the VFX were trolled even before the film’s release. Ultimately, the film has an IMDb score of 2.7 out of 10. The film just made money Earned Rs 350 crore worldwide at the box office, which is much less than its landing cost.
When Ramayan will return to theaters
Undeterred by the lackluster performance of Adipurush, filmmaker Nitish Tiwari is now re-adapting the epic. His Ramayana was reportedly based on a vast Budgeted at Rs 800 crore, it stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The shooting of the film is currently going on and it is targeted to be released in 2025.
