From eggs and fish to pulses and cheese, learn foods that can help increase immunity and speed up recovery from tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis, an infectious bacterial disease, is caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis. It affects the lungs and spreads through the air, especially when an affected person sneezes, coughs or spit. However, the role of nutrition in tuberculosis treatment is very low.
In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Rishabh Raj, Consultant Chest Medicine and Critical Care, KJ Somaiya Hospital and Research Center said, “Malnutrition is one of the important risk factors that leads to the development of tuberculosis. Importance of nutrition in the treatment of tuberculosis:
“A healthy diet is paramount for patients to overcome tuberculosis. A dietary rich in protein helps in creating immunity against tuberculosis base and provides a significant support in treatment. A healthy diet also provides a natural source of vitamin and micronutrients that helps in better tolerance of anti-tuberculosis,” Dr. Rishabh Raj said.
Dietary practice to support recovery from tuberculosis:
- Consuming high protein is very important for patients suffering from tuberculosis, with recommended protein intake of 1 gram per kg of body weight per day.
- For those who consume non-vegetarian food, the diet should include eggs, white meat and fish.
- Red meat should be consumed in moderation as it may result in an increase in uric acid levels that leads to side effects with anti-tubercular drugs.
- For vegetarian people, diet should be rich in green leafy vegetables, pulses, soy, cottage cheese.

- Patients are not able to consume a lot of food at a time due to ongoing anti-tubercular therapy. Thus, they are advised for small but frequent food that are rich in protein and nutrients.
- Alcohol and smoking should be strictly avoided during treatment.
