Exercising beyond our body’s capacity can affect us in many ways, including muscle strain, mood swings, and insomnia. In fact, exercising too much can even sabotage your weight loss efforts. It can lead to excessive fatigue and muscle strain, which can reduce the effectiveness of your workout. It can also increase stress hormones like cortisol, which can promote fat storage.

If you are feeling tired all the time, affecting your efficiency, feeling dizzy, or not able to sleep well, you may need to cut down on your exercise hours to get the best out of your workouts. It is important to stay well hydrated at all times, get enough rest, and minimise your exposure to heat during a heatwave to stay healthy.

Dr. Rahul Agarwal Consultant Internal Medicine Care Hospitals Hitech City Hyderabad says, “With frequent heat wave warnings, we are heading towards a tough summer. Exercise is important for physical health, but it is also important to do it in moderation.”

Dr. Agarwal says that excessive exercise in summer can cause many side effects ranging from fatigue, heatstroke to insomnia. Try not to overheat your body and keep it cool with natural remedies.

side effects of excess exercise

1. Feeling tired: The combination of hot weather and exercise may not be good for your body and many individuals may experience exhaustion. Fatigue is when you are constantly tired, even after a good rest. Constant fatigue is a sign that you are exercising too much and need to slow down for a while.

2. Fatigue from intense workouts: Intense exercise can lead to burnout. This also affects a person’s performance level, causing a decline. Burnout can also lead to frustration because a person is unable to perform well during exercise.

3. Dehydration: Intense exercise leads to excessive sweating, which leads to loss of fluids from the body. If the amount of fluid in the body is insufficient, a person may suffer from dehydration. Symptoms such as dry mouth or dizziness may be a sign of dehydration.

4. Heat stroke: This is one of the serious side effects of excessive exercise. Heat stroke usually occurs when the body temperature is not controlled. It can also lead to death. A person may experience symptoms such as an increase in heart rate. Heat stroke can cause the body temperature to rise suddenly.

5. Insomnia: Excessive exercise can cause the release of stress hormones in the body. High cortisol can affect sleep quality and even cause insomnia.
