The Trinumool Congress (TMC), led by Mamta Banerjee, faces an internal crisis after a spat between its Lok Sabha member Parliament (MP) Kalyan Banerjee and other MPs.
A video of a verbal spat between Kalyan Banerjee and a party’s female MP, and another party MP in the party’s official WhatsApp group, Kalyan Banerjee and Kirti Azad went viral on Tuesday to the deep party on Tuesday.
Mint could not verify the authenticity of WhatsApp messages independently.
What was trigger?
The dispute began on April 4 when a TMC delegation visited the Election Commission to submit a memorandum about the duplicate voter ID card, the news agency PTI quoted Malavia and TMC.
According to the PTI report, TMC MP Mahua Motra found that his name was missing from the list of signators on the memorandum that the delegation had to submit it to the Election Commission. Instead, the name of Kakoli Ghosh Dastra was added. The dacoids were not there to present the memorandum.
Motra faced Kalyan Banerjee – who except the party’s head Koda – from the list “except” from the list. Banerjee is a TMC MP from Serampor. Motra is a TMC MP from Krishnagar.
Soon, a dispute broke between two MPs in the EC office in the national capital. The news agency report said that Kalyan Banerjee later claimed that Motra had asked the security personnel present there to the security personnel there.
Later, Senior TMC MP of Dum Dum, Saugata Roy said that Motra was crying after a change and demanded that Banerjee should be removed as the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha. Roy said, “What he has done has disarmed the party. It should be immediately removed as the main whip. Kalyan Banerjee is known for his intimate and rude behavior.”
Who are they to send me to jail?
Kalyan Banerjee addressed a press conference on the issue. “I have been in politics for the last 40 years. This female MP was asking me to arrest me from security outside the EC office. Who are they to send me to jail? She abused me. I fight in Parliament. I am not obsessed with an industrial house,” Banerjee said without naming Moightra.
“Just because the female MP speaks fluently English, it does not mean that she can insult someone,” she said. Kalyan Banerjee later issued a statement to Mahua Motra of Trinmool in the name of “rude” and a “rude” MP.
The crisis within the TMC comes a year before the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, which is expected to be held in March -April 2026.
Saugata Roy was not present during the Spat at the EC office. But he said that he saw Motra crying and complained to other MPs in Vijay Chowk.
“He told other MPs that he had behaved in a rude manner. He has a history – Jyotiraditya Scindia is a ‘Lady Killer’ to throw a bottle during a JPC meeting (on Waqf Board). I have been silent so far, but it can not go,” he said.
In December 2024, Kalyan Banerjee came for a sharp attack to call Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia a “Lady Killer” during a warm conversation in Parliament. After the incident, BJP women MPs met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was demanding action against the West Bengal MP.
In October 2024, a meeting of the Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill became ugly after Kalyan Banerjee allegedly broke the glass water bottle and thrown it during the warm exchange of words with Abhijeet Gangopadhyay of BJP.
The change in the EC office deteriorated on 4 April after going to the WhatsApp group of the official TMC MPS, where Banerjee and TMC MP Kirti Azad was engaged in a new exchange.
The screenshot of a chat shared by Malavia on social media created several snide comments directed on a “versatile international woman”.
“Send your BSF and Delhi Police to arrest me. The connection of your Home Ministry is very strong, the international great woman,” read a message that is a message that is given to Banerjee.
Former cricketer and MP from Bardhaman-Durgapur, Kirti Azad responded rapidly in chat, saying that Banerjee was behaving like a “teenage criminal”.
Banerjee then made fun of Azad, called him a “captain of internal politics”, and ridiculed him on his election defeat in cricket administration.
First issues between Kalyan and Azad
PTI said that according to the inner sources of the party, the quarrel is before.
Banerjee had allegedly objected to a proposal to open a ‘Sandesh’ (Bengali Sweet) stall in the Parliament house on a proposal of Azad. Banerjee had argued that if an outlet was to be opened, it should be the franchise of a state government.
According to sources, Moitra came out of the WhatsApp group of MPs after the EC incident and came out of the WhatsApp group of MPs after the EC incident and gave details of their complaints.
Kalyan Banerjee also has to learn to complain about the incident to the Chief Minister of West Bengal orally.
