Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday extended his support to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)’s reported plan to remove the adjective “Great” from the names of Mughal emperor Akbar and Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan from school history textbooks.
Speaking to news agency ANI in Bongaigaon, Assam, Sarma reacted to the reports and said, “Very well done”. However, he said he was not sure whether the changes had been incorporated into the books.
Sarma said, “I have not seen whether they have done so or not. If they have done so, then on my behalf I am very thankful to NCERT.”

The chief minister then went on to say, “Tipu-Ipu ko maro ekdum. Jahan bhejna hai, udhar hi bhej do. Samundar mein phek do” (Beat up that Tipu. Send him wherever you want. Throw him into the sea).
Sarma made this comment a day after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Sunil Ambekar said that NCERT has made some changes in history textbooks and they will no longer use the adjective ‘great’ with the names of Mughal emperor Akbar or Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.
“I can see that many good changes have been brought about in the history books, and more can be made in the future. But now, there is no ‘Akbar the Great’ in them (history textbooks), nor there is ‘Tipu Sultan the Great’ in them. Many changes have been brought in, however no one has been removed from these books because the new generation should know their cruel acts and also know because of whom we suffered and from whom we should be free, Ambekar said at the Orange City Literature Festival in Kanpur on Friday. However, NCERT’s reported move was not welcomed by Congress leaders, who asked what such measures would achieve.
“He ruled the country for 700 years. He didn’t rule just for a day or two… You removed his name, but what would be achieved by removing or adding? … During his rule, the GDP was 27 per cent. India was also called the golden bird. He came here and was destroyed here. The last emperor was beheaded, but he did not accept British slavery. He saw his sons’ heads decorated on plates. But he would not accept slavery,” Congress MP Imran Masood said those who “kneeled before the British” are now “enjoying themselves in the present government”.
