Keto diet and mental illness: Ketogenic diet is commonly called keto diet. This is a high fat, medium protein and low carbs diet, which is generally known for weight loss. This special diet encourages the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. Because of this people start losing weight. According to experts, following keto diet provides many benefits to the body. This diet is considered beneficial for mental health. A new study has revealed that keto diet can be effective in providing relief from serious mental illnesses.
Stanford Medicine report According to a new study shows that a ketogenic diet rich in low-carb and high-fat foods can reduce the symptoms of serious mental illness. This diet can also reduce weight gain and side effects of medicines used to treat mental problems. This study was conducted on 23 patients suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in a clinical trial led by researchers at Stanford Medicine. It was found that keto diet can prove to be effective in improving severe mental illness.
Researchers included patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in the study and instructed them to follow a diet consisting of 10 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein and about 60 percent fat. After 4 months of following the ketogenic diet, there was significant improvement in the condition of 79 percent of the patients. According to researchers, the metabolic effects of ketogenic diet can help in stabilizing the brain. In fact, medicines given to treat serious mental illness can cause metabolic side effects. This increases insulin resistance and weight.
Researchers believe that the keto diet may improve psychiatric symptoms by correcting metabolic problems. According to health experts, this study was very small and more research is needed on whether keto diet can really have a meaningful and long-term effect on patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, till now many studies have considered keto diet beneficial for mental health. Even many researches have claimed that ketogenic diet can be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy. However, if you have any mental problem or any other health problem, then follow this diet only after taking doctor’s advice.
