Supporting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s motion condemning the imposition of Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the incident “showed how democracy was throttled” and “presented an example of what dictatorship is like.”
Speaking on Twitter (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said, “I am glad that the Hon’ble Speaker strongly condemned the Emergency, highlighted the excesses committed during that period and how democracy was throttled. The moment of silence to honour all those who suffered during those days was also a wonderful gesture.”
“The Emergency was imposed 50 years ago, but it is important for today’s youth to know about it because it is a perfect example of what happens when the Constitution is trampled, public opinion is suppressed and institutions are destroyed. The events during the Emergency exemplified a dictatorship,” the PM further said.
Reading out a resolution on Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the imposition of Emergency and said it was a direct attack on the Constitution by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
He said, “This House strongly condemns the decision to impose Emergency in 1975. We appreciate the determination of all those who opposed the Emergency, fought and took up the responsibility of protecting the democracy of India.”
He said, “25 June 1975 will always be known as a black chapter in the history of India. On this day, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed emergency in the country and attacked the Constitution made by Baba Saheb Ambedkar.”
Birla said that India is known as the mother of democracy all over the world.
Birla said, “Democratic values and debate have always been supported in India. Democratic values have always been protected, they have always been encouraged. Indira Gandhi imposed dictatorship on such an India. India’s democratic values were crushed and freedom of expression was stifled.”
He said that the rights of Indian citizens were crushed and their freedom was taken away.
Birla said, “That was the time when opposition leaders were put in jail, the whole country was turned into a prison. The then dictatorial government had imposed many restrictions on the media and the autonomy of the judiciary was also curbed.”
Opposition MPs, including those of the Congress, stood up and raised slogans against the reference to the Emergency.
