The India-made Hyundai Grand i10 for African markets has received a zero-star safety rating in the latest Global NCAP crash test results. The hatchback received zero stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection. In terms of scores, the car recorded 0 out of 34 for adult safety and 28.57 out of 49 for child safety.
Global NCAP said that while the car achieved moderate results for child safety, adult safety was found to be extremely poor, with a high risk of life-threatening injuries during crashes.
What did the crash test reveal?
According to the crash test report, the frontal impact test observed “concerning weak protection for the driver’s chest”. In the side impact test, the level of chest protection was rated as high risk for non-recoverable injuries, exceeding the permitted maximum injury limit. As a result, Global NCAP gave a score of zero for adult occupant safety.

The report also said that the bodyshell and footwell area were considered unstable in a frontal crash and could not withstand further loading. Additionally, the Africa-spec Grand i10 does not come with standard side body or head airbags. Seat belt reminders are provided for the driver only, and ESC is not offered as standard equipment.
Commenting on the results, Richard Woods, CEO of Global NCAP, said: “It is unacceptable to see a continued double standard on safety in low- and middle-income countries. Democratizing vehicle safety in Africa is a Global NCAP priority, and consumers deserve safe vehicles, no matter where they live in the world.”
Key differences with India-specific models
The vehicle tested was manufactured in India for African markets. In comparison, the India-spec Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is equipped with a more comprehensive safety package. Standard features include driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), and seat belt pretensioners for both front occupants.

Higher versions of the Nios offer additional safety features such as electronic stability program, vehicle stability management and hill-start assist. However, ISOFIX child seat mounts are only available on the top-spec trim level.
