New Delhi. In India, more people are dying in road accidents than deaths due to terrorism, war and Naxalism. Speaking at the FICCI Road Safety Awards and Conclave 2024, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed concern over road accidents. He said that blackspots are increasing in road projects due to poor detailed project reports (DPR). Gadkari said that 5,00,000 road accidents occur in the country every year, leading to 1,50,000 deaths and 3,00,000 injuries. This causes a loss of 3 percent of the country’s GDP.
Gadkari also said that “The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is preparing new codes for ambulances and their drivers. So that the lives of the injured in road accidents can be saved. At present, many ambulances lack these necessary equipment, which leads to a delay of up to three hours in rescuing the victims.
Accidents are increasing due to bad roads
Gadkari said, “It is very common to blame the driver, but let me tell you that I look closely – often, the fault lies in road engineering.” To reduce the number of accidents, Gadkari stressed the need for safety audits of all highways and lane discipline.
Only buses of global standards will run in India
According to Gadkari, from 2025, only buses meeting international safety standards will be allowed to ply on the roads. He said that this decision has been taken to replace the old style used in the manufacturing of buses. In which hammers, wooden planks and aluminum sheets are often used. He believes that this change will greatly improve the safety standards of public transport.
To further improve road safety measures, Gadkari proposed a collaboration in which the industry would take the help of engineering colleges and IITs to conduct road safety audits.
