Arvind Srinivas, CEO of Artificial Intelligence startup Perplexity, is once again in the headlines. This Indian-origin entrepreneur recently promoted his new Comet AI Browser on social media platform This statement has come at a time when Perplexity has launched its new AI-powered Comet browser only last month. This browser has been designed to directly compete with Google Chrome and the company claims that it will provide users with a ‘familiar yet smart experience’.
Chrome has more than 3 billion users worldwide, and if this deal were to go through, Perplexity could get a huge advantage in the AI-search market. The company promised that if Chrome came to them, they would keep Chromium open-source, not change default search settings, and invest $3 billion over two years.
This offer came at a time when the US Justice Department (DOJ) was pressurizing Google to sell Chrome in the monopoly case against it. The DOJ said that separating Chrome would reduce Google’s control over search and would give other companies a level playing field.
Comet Browser is the AI version of Chrome
Now Perplexity has launched its own Comet Browser. It is based on Chromium framework, which means it supports Chrome extensions and bookmarks.
Comet has an AI-sidebar assistant that performs tasks like article summaries, email drafts, schedule management, and real-time fact-checking. Apart from this, it also has smart tools like workspace feature, content generation, and personalized recommendations.
Comet is currently available on Windows and macOS for Perplexity Pro users in India. Android pre-orders are open, while the iOS version will be launched soon. The special thing is that Perplexity has partnered with Bharti Airtel, under which users are being given 1 year free Pro subscription.
