Selena Gomez recently found herself defending her Spanish-language skills after a viral clip surfaced in which Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez criticized her performance and accent in the Netflix film Emilia Perez. The 32-year-old actress took to social media on Saturday evening to address the backlash following the film’s release last month.

Derbez criticized Gomez’s Spanish accent.
Derbez recently appeared on the Spanish-language podcast, Hablando de Cine, where he described the singer’s accent in the film as ‘inexcusable’. Gomez plays Jessie Del Monte, the wife of a Mexican drug cartel leader, in the musical thriller. Jessie is originally from America but speaks Spanish in the film. She previously fled to Switzerland, which explains her accent and the way she speaks Spanish in the film.
Derbez said on the podcast, “I [watched the film] With people, and whenever there was a scene of that, we would look at each other and say, “Wow, what is this?'” as reported by the Daily Mail.
Podcast show host Gabby Meza called the Same Old Love singer “a very talented actress” who had various nominations to her name for her work. However, she agreed with DeBrez as she also criticized Gomez for her accent, claiming it was because the singer is a native English speaker. “Spanish is not their main language, not their secondary or fifth language,” Meza said. And that’s why I feel like she doesn’t know what she’s saying. She can’t give any nuance to her acting if she doesn’t know what she’s saying.
Sharing a high five with the host, the 63-year-old actor said, “I’m glad you’re saying that because I was like, ‘Why is no one talking about it?'” he wondered while giving his explanation. expressed why no one criticized it in America. “I feel like they don’t speak Spanish. If you watch a Russian movie or a German movie with subtitles and you see someone [speaking in the original language]You say, ‘Oh, look. Ok! interesting.'”
Derbez argued that non-Spanish-speaking viewers cannot fully understand Gómez’s acting flaws, as they rely on subtitles to watch Emilia Pérez and do not understand the language.
“I thought it was an interesting experiment,” he quipped. Gomez responds to Debrez’s criticism
The singer responded to Debrez’s criticism of her Spanish accent. In the comments section of the TikTok video, which included the actor’s comment, Gomez replied, “I understand where you’re coming from..I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. It doesn’t matter how much work and heart I have put into this film.
Conversely, in October, Derbez was photographed with Gomez at a screening of Emilia Pérez during the New York Film Festival. Despite his earlier criticism, the actor shared the photo on his Instagram and praised the film as a “great movie!” and also tagged Gomez along with other artists.
