The spread of a rare “flesh-eating bacteria” disease has accelerated following the easing of COVID-era restrictions in Japan, potentially resulting in deaths within 48 hours.

As reported BloombergCases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) rose to 977 as of June 2 this year, surpassing last year’s record of 941 cases, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, which has been tracking incidences of the disease since 1999.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) commonly causes a swollen and painful throat, known as “strep throat” in children. However, certain strains of this bacteria can rapidly progress to symptoms, including limb pain, fever, low blood pressure, and can potentially lead to tissue death, difficulty breathing, organ failure, and mortality. Individuals aged 50 years and older have a higher risk of developing this condition.

“Most deaths occur within 48 hours,” said Ken Kikuchi, a professor of infectious diseases at Tokyo Women’s Medical University. “While patients may notice swelling in their legs in the morning, by the afternoon it may spread to the knee, and they may die within 48 hours.”
In late 2022, several European countries reported an increase in cases of invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease, including STSS, to the World Health Organization (WHO). The increase in cases occurred after these countries eased COVID restrictions.

“At the current rate of infection, the number of cases in Japan could reach 2,500 this year, and the mortality rate could reach 30%,” Kikuchi said.
Kikuchi urged people to maintain hand hygiene and treat any open wounds. He said patients may have gas in their intestines, which can contaminate hands through feces. Bloomberg,
