When the airport was inaugurated in 1994, it was designed to swim on soft sea soil using modern land improvement techniques. However, the initial sunshine was greater than the estimate and declined by about 12 meters in the first 8 years of operation. The foundation of the soft soil of the airport is not able to bear its heavy weight. Increasing pressure and natural powers of the sea are slowly pulling this engineering miracle towards depth. Due to which its existence is under threat in future.
KIX has also been recognized internationally for its employees, efficiency and architectural design. In 2024, around 3.06 crore passengers traveled to 91 cities in 25 countries via its terminals. The JB storm in 2018 revealed the importance of dealing with the problem of drowning by bringing disastrous floods. This made the weakness of the airport even more clear. It was temporarily closed due to floods caused by the storm.
