This photo of our solar system’s planet Saturn shows what a person would see if they hovered close to this giant ringed world. This photo was taken in 2005 by the robotic Cassini spacecraft, which orbited Saturn from 2004 to 2017.
This image highlights Saturn’s majestic rings, which appear as a straight curved line. The intricate structure of the rings is best seen in the dark shadow that forms above the planet.

This image shows a rare view of a distant star cloud, NGC 602, located on the outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy located about 200 thousand light-years away. The 5-million-year-old star cluster NGC 602 is surrounded by its birth blanket of gas and dust.
The pictured image spans about 200 light-years, but a fascinating assortment of background galaxies, millions of light-years away, are also visible in this clear view.

Astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel discovered this ancient star cluster in the eighteenth century. Since then, it has been known as Caroline’s Rose. When viewed through a small telescope, it resembles rose petals nested in a nest.
Now estimated to be about 1.6 billion years young, the galaxy, or open cluster of stars, also shows age. All the stars in the cluster were probably born at the same time, but the brighter and more massive stars have exhausted the hydrogen fuel in their cores more quickly.

The image shows Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks with a bright ion tail, pushed directly out from the Sun by the solar wind. At upper right is Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks’ glowing central coma. Extending outward from the coma, mostly to the left, the comet’s dust tail extends.
A distant bright star, Alpha Leporis, is also visible below in this image taken from Namibia last week.

The US space agency has shared an image provided by Alex Linde of a mysterious squid-like cosmic cloud that stretches almost three full moons across the sky of planet Earth. This cosmic cloud was discovered by French astro-imaginator Nicolas Outers in 2011. The bipolar shape of the Squid Nebula is identified here by the blue emission emanating from doubly ionized oxygen atoms.
