London, Sep 19 (IANS) Multiple award-winning actor Denzel Washington, fuelling speculation about his retirement, has said he needs inspiration from a filmmaker to take up a project as there are very few movies left that would interest him in visiting a film set.
“The Equalizer” star, whose career has spanned more than 40 years in cinema, TV and theater, said Ridley Scott was a big attraction for him to join the cast of the director’s “Gladiator II.”
In the upcoming film, Washington plays a power broker named Macrinus, under whose tutelage Paul Mescal’s Lucius, the grandson of former Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla, resolves to fight as a gladiator.
“There are very few movies left that interest me, and I have to look for inspiration from the filmmaker, and I was very inspired by Ridley,” Washington, 69, said in an interview with Empire magazine.
“Gladiator II” is a follow-up to Scott’s 2000 hit film “Gladiator”, starring Russell Crowe. It sees the master director reuniting with Washington after the 2007 action thriller “American Gangster”.
“We had a great first meeting and now here we are. She is engaged. She is excited about life and her next film. She is an inspiration. We should all feel the same even at the age of 86,” the actor said.
