Neerja Bhanot: This story is of air hostess Neerja Bhanot, who has written a wonderful story of bravery. At the age of just 23, Neerja wrote such a story of bravery that not only India but the whole world including Pakistan would be crazy about her bravery. Actually, Neerja Bhanot is the same Indian heroine who saved the lives of hundreds of passengers of Pan Am Airlines trapped in the clutches of hijackers. Neerja, who was posted as crew head in the flight, did not shy away from sacrificing her life for her passengers.
Actually, this matter happened about 38 years ago. Neerja Bhanot, born on 7 September 1963 in a Punjabi Hindu Brahmin family of Chandigarh, was posted as an air hostess in Pan American World Airways (Pan AM) in those days. On September 5, 1986, Neerja’s duty was as crew head on Pan Am Airlines Flight 73. This flight was to reach New York Airport in America via Mumbai Airport, Karachi in Pakistan and Frankfurt City in Germany. This flight left for Karachi from Mumbai Airport on its scheduled time.

Hijackers’ plan failed due to Neerja’s wisdom
In this flight, there were a total of 365 passengers from India, America, Pakistan, Germany, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Sweden and United Kingdom, of which about 91 were citizens of Indian origin. Apart from this, there were a total of 23 cabin crew members in this flight, out of which maximum 13 crew members were of Indian origin. Neerja Bhanot was a part of this Indian crew. The crew members included 4 from the United Kingdom, 3 from Germany, 2 from America and 1 air hostess from France. This flight landed at Karachi Airport at around 6 in the morning.
About 109 passengers were to deboard at Karachi Airport. During the deboarding of passengers, terrorists of Palestinian origin attacked and captured the plane. The intention of these terrorists was to hijack the plane and take it to Cyprus and Israel. The hijackers wanted to free their terrorist associates jailed in Cyprus and Israel by exchanging the lives of the passengers present on the plane. But, due to the wisdom of Neerja Bhanot, this could not happen. Neerja very intelligently relayed the hijack message to the pilot, so that he could get out of the plane in time.

The whole world bowed its head at the feet of Neerja
Due to Neerja’s wisdom, the Pan Am Airlines plane could not proceed beyond Karachi Airport, due to which the enraged hijackers showered bullets and grenades on the passengers. Neerja bravely opened all the emergency gates of the plane, due to which most of the passengers were successful in getting out of the plane after saving their lives. Neerja Bhanot also had a chance to get out of the plane, but in the desire to save some children, she let this opportunity go. While trying to save these children, she became the target of hijackers’ bullets.
Neerja may have sacrificed her life and gone away from her loved ones, but not only India, but Pakistan and the whole world was impressed by her bravery. Neerja Bhanot was posthumously awarded Ashok Chakra for bravery. Neerja was the youngest Indian woman to receive this honour. Apart from this, Pakistan honored Neerja’s martyrdom and honored her with ‘Nishan-e-Pakistan’. This is the fourth highest award of Pakistan. Apart from this, Neerja was honored with the United States Special Courage Award.
