For the first time in history, scientists have captured direct images of the Sun’s north and south poles, thanks to the European Space Agency -led solar orbiter mission. Tilt your orbit of 17 degrees from the acryptic aircraft – flat aircraft in which the Earth and the orbit of most planets – solar orbiter provided humanity with a rare and valuable new view of our nearest stars.

Professor Carroll Mundel, director of ESA science, said, “Today we reveal the first ideas of the sun of mankind.” “These new unique thoughts of our solar orbiter mission are the beginning of a new era of solar science.”

Why do poles matter

So far, all solar images have come from the equatorial point of view. Dhruva – important to understand the magnetic field and solar cycle of the Sun was hidden.

The solar physicist of the Milward Space Science Laboratory of University College London, Dr. Hamish Reid said, “We are really missing to understand this (solar cycle), which is actually happening above and down the sun.”

First result from south pole

The new images issued by ESA on Wednesday (June 10) were taken in March at the time of maximum solar activity from about 40 million miles (65 million km) away. They reveal chaotic magnetic fields with both the north and south polarity present on the south pole of the Sun – an event that occurs only during the solar maximum, when the magnetic field of the Sun is flipped.

“We see in images and movies of polar regions that the Sun’s magnetic field is chaotic at the poles in the (current) phase of the solar cycle – high solar activity, cycle maximum,” said Prof. Sami Solanki, the chief explorer of PHI Instrument of Solar Orbitter from Max Planck Institute in Germany.

Magnetic field is flip away

The images of solar orbiter are important for understanding the 11 -year solar cycle, during which the sun’s magnetic poles flip. It runs the formation of sunspots, solar flares and coronal mass ejections – which can all affect life on earth.

Reid said, “As long as there is a clear north and south pole on Earth, the solar orbiter measurement both north and south polarity are currently present on the south pole of the Sun,” Reed said.

“In the coming years, the sun solar will reach the minimum, and we expect to see more systematic magnetic fields around the sun’s poles.”

A mission year in making

A joint mission between ESA and NASA was launched from Florida in 2020. In February 2024, its bending class was obtained through a Venus gravity aid. Further flybis will increase this angle beyond 30 degrees, increasing our approach to polar regions.

ESA’s Solar Orbiter Project Scientist Daniel Muller said, “This is the first step of the ‘ladder to heaven’ of the solar orbiter.” “These data will change our understanding of the Sun’s magnetic field, solar wind and solar activity.”

Heir of ulysses

While the Ulysses Mission flew at solar poles in the 1990s, it lacked imaging capabilities.

Solanki said, “Yulisis … did not take any optical instruments – telescope or cameras – and so could not create the image of the sun,” Solanki said. “The solar orbiter changes.”

North Pole Data Inward

Data from the North Pole is still being transmitted to Earth and is expected to come in the coming weeks. Scientists are eager to analyze the new imagery and expand the model of the solar cycle and heliosfare – the huge bubble formed by the solar air that covers the entire solar system.

Reid said, “The data that the solar orbiter receives during the coming years will help the modeler to predict the solar cycle.” “This is important for us on Earth because the Sun’s activity causes solar flares and coronal mass ejections, resulting in radio communication blackouts, destabilizing our power grid, but can also run a sensational Arora.”
