This month, on October 17, sky watchers are going to get a special gift. The astronomical phenomenon of the full moon, which this time is the Hunter Moon, is likely to present a rare sight, which will be seen closer than any other moon this year. Being a Hunter’s Moon, the largest supermoon ever, it will be larger and brighter than the average moon.
October Purnima 2024: Date and Time
According to NASA, the full moon will be visible at 7:26 am EDT on Thursday morning, October 17, 2024, and at 4:26 am (IST) in India. This will be late Wednesday night for the International Date Line West time zone and Friday morning New Zealand time to the International Date Line eastward.

What is a hunter moon?
The name “Hunter’s Moon” is derived from the traditions of the Algonquin Native American tribe. The Hunter’s Moon occurs after the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, with the leaves falling and the deer fattening up, it’s time to hunt. As harvesters have harvested the fields, hunters can easily see the animals that are out to glean (and the foxes that are out to hunt them).
This astronomical event also symbolizes the change of seasons. Historically, this time of year marks the period when tribes stock up on meat for the coming winter. The name reflects the practice of hunting and gathering during this season.
This will be the third (and brightest by a small margin) of four consecutive supermoons.
For Hindus, it is Sharad Purnima, also known as Kumar Purnima, Kojagari Purnima, Navanna Purnima Kojagrat Purnima or Kaumudi Purnima. It is a harvest festival celebrated in various ways.
